Halevy, Elie
(1760-1826)
   French Hebrew writer and poet. He was born in Fürth, Bavaria, and moved to Paris, where he served as cantor, secretary of the Jewish community, and teacher. From 1817 to 1819 he edited and published a weekly journal, LTsraelite francais. His Teachings of Religion and Ethics is a textbook for Jewish religious instruction. His poem Ha-Shalom commemorates the ceasefire between France and England in 1802.
